We all want to keep all of our natural teeth, but the unfortunate truth is that there are several reasons why a tooth might need to be extracted. Whether due to extreme decay, infection, damage, or an unsuccessful root canal, removing the tooth can be more beneficial to the health of your mouth than trying to save it. At Smile Scarsdale, our goal is to help you maintain healthy teeth and gums, and if a tooth extraction becomes necessary to achieve that, you can have confidence that we’ll perform one safely and comfortably for you in Scarsdale, NY.
To determine whether a tooth extraction will be necessary, our dentist will evaluate the affected tooth along with your overall health and consider all treatment options available. If it is decided that a tooth extraction is the best option, x-rays may be taken to give your dentist a better look at the affected tooth.
There are two types of extraction. If the tooth has fully erupted, is free of damage, and completely visible, a simple extraction can be performed. For this procedure, the tooth will be loosened from the gums with a dental tool called an elevator, then removed with forceps.
On the other hand, if the affected tooth (or teeth) has suffered from severe damage or decay, or has not fully erupted, a surgical extraction will be needed. A surgical extraction requires an incision to be made into the gums in order to properly access the tooth. It will then either be removed from the gums or be broken into smaller pieces before it can be removed.
If the extracted tooth or teeth leave a gap in your smile, it’s recommended that you choose a restoration option such as a dental bridge, partial denture, or dental implant. Leaving gaps in the teeth can have negative consequences on the health and function of your teeth in addition to the appearance of your smile. Teeth replacement will generally not be needed if the teeth extracted were wisdom teeth.
