Emergency Dentistry

Dental emergencies can be especially problematic because you will require special treatment but may not be able to schedule an appointment easily. At Smile Scarsdale, we want you to have access to the care you need as promptly as possible. If an emergency should occur to you or a loved one when you don’t have an appointment, call our office in Scarsdale. We will try to fit you in between other appointments or we can refer you to another trusted professional. It is important to receive treatment as soon as possible in order to minimize damage and restore your oral health. There are also certain steps you can take to maximize your comfort and health until you are able to see a professional.

Toothaches are usually warning signs of a more complicated issue. They commonly occur as a result of trauma to the tooth, infection, cavities, or erupting wisdom teeth. Because there are so many possible causes, it is important to see your dentist at Smile Scarsdale as soon as possible in order to have the problem identified and treated. To deal with the pain or discomfort in the meantime, over-the-counter pain medication can help.

Sore gums

Clean the area as well as you can – remove any food debris and rinse with a warm salt water solution. If there is facial swelling, apply a cold compress. Like with toothaches, over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can help.

Cracked tooth

Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area. Collect all the tooth fragments that you can and clean them off. Apply a cold compress if there is facial swelling. A dental cement can be applied to the affected tooth to preserve it and to relieve pain.

Lost filling or crown

Like with a cracked tooth, applying a dental cement can alleviate pain and discomfort. Clove oil can also help with any pain. If it is a crown that has been loosened, clean it and bring it in. Your dentist will try to put it back in place, but if this is not possible, a new one will be made.

Knocked-out (avulsed) tooth

Recover the lost tooth, holding it only by the crown and not the root, and gently rinse it off. Do not clean it thoroughly or use any type of soap on it. Hold it in place in its socket, if possible. If not, preserve it in a container of milk or saliva and bring it in.

Our team at Smile Scarsdale is available for routine appointments as well as dental emergencies in Scarsdale.
